"tempting tools of the trade"

2023.03

Published in Seventeenth International Conference on Design Principles & Practices, this paper covers two courses that challenged the stability and uniformity of our design pedagogy by foregoing expected results in favor of collaborative exploration and productive misuse of design tools.

"Island Topographies to Reduce Short-Circuiting in Stormwater Detention Ponds and Treatment Wetlands"

2018.06

Published in Ecological Engineering, the paper identifies urban stormwater as an increasing environmental problem for cities worldwide. Many cities have turned to green infrastructure solutions, which provide water treatment and retention while also harnessing other ecosystem services. This study considered the design of detention ponds and treatment wetlands with the goal of improving hydraulic performance (specifically reducing short-circuiting) while also increasing habitat diversity.

"design guidelines for urban stormwater wetlands"

2018.04

This booklet is the result of a two-year research project between planners, designers and engineers that looks at the potential of urban wetlands and ponds as a strategy for stormwater flooding. It provides illustrative design strategies based on two case study cities, as well as a topography design catalog to use in future city designs.

"home on the range"

2017.05

Published in Princeton's architecture journal PIDGIN 22: Flora and Fauna, this paper and illustrations investigate two nomads in a Wyoming winter range: pronghorn and oil derricks. Written as a critical assessment of territorial migration patterns between the two nomads and the enabling legal framework, the paper proposes a new leasing policy that allows pronghorn and oil wells to share a common territory.
